Tantrums: Which Type of Tantrums Is Your Child Having?
MegaMom’s Definitions. Tantrums come in two different varieties: Type-One Tantrums and Type-Two Tantrums.
Type-One Tantrums: These are tantrums that are true expressions of anger that has escalated to the point of rage. Type-One tantrums are anger out of control or almost so. These tantrums can look and sound a number of different ways. They may be expressed solely in a verbal way with screaming or crying. Or they may be accompanied by a number of physical enhancements such as body stiffening, breath holding, kicking, flailing, or attacking.
Type-Two Tantrums: These are tantrums that combine an expression of anger (that could be genuine and unexaggerated or exaggerated or even faked) with some conscious or deliberate manipulation or intimidation. These are the type of tantrums that older children (two years old and up) tend to throw (and in my case, my first two spouses). Type-Two tantrums may be precipitated when you deny your child something, such as a toy or treat. This denial causes the child to feel angry and provokes a deliberate attempt to manipulate, shame, or intimidate you into changing your mind.
Both of these types of tantrums are preventable and can be entirely eliminated from your child’s behavioral repertoire. You can learn everything you need to know in order to stop tantrums from occurring with your child. The keys to eliminating tantrums are in MegaMom’s Wisdom for Tantrums: The Tantrum Book to End All Tantrums. (The Secret to Total Prevention and Total Elimination of Temper Tantrums: Infant Anger Management.) This book also teaches you to entirely prevent tantrums from ever occurring in a child by starting to use Infant Anger Management from the time of the child’s birth.
